You do NOT need a learner's permit to start Driver's Education. Many use the course to prepare for
the MVA learner's permit test. (You can apply for a learner's permit at the age of 15 and 9 months.)
The Driver's Education course consists of two parts: a classroom portion, and an in-car driving
portion. Students may take the classroom portion without a learner's permit, and then complete the
road training after obtaining a permit.
What are the requirements to obtain a learner's permit?
The required age for a Learner's Permit is 15 years and 9 months old, with co-signature of a
parent or guardian required for all applicants under age 18. New drivers must pass vision and
knowledge tests at the MVA. The vision requirement is 20/40 vision (or corrective lenses). The
knowledge test is a 20-question exam taken on a computer. Obtaining a Learner's Permit costs
$50.
Special-needs students may set up a verbal examination by appointment only. Please contact the MVA
if you require this service.
What are the requirements to obtain a Provisional License?
The required age for a Provisional License is 16 years and 6 months old, with co-signature of a
parent or guardian required for all applicants under age 18. Other requirements include: successful
completion of the full Driver's Education program, a minimum of 60 hours supervised driving practice
outside of class, and a valid Learner's Permit held for at least nine months. New drivers who meet
these requirements are eligible to test for the Provisional License. This is a driving test,
scheduled by appointment only.
